Prisoners in Freedom City

“Prisoners in Freedom City” is a documentary made by Hu Jia (胡佳) and Zeng Jinyan (曾金燕), both human rights activists and bloggers based in Beijing. The documentary is about their soft detention[1] by the Beijing police.

On December 27, 2007 Hu was taken from his home in Beijing and on April 3, 2008, he was sentenced to three-and-a-half years’ imprisonment and one year’s deprivation of political rights for “inciting subversion of state power.” Hu is currently held at Chaobai Prison in Beijing while Zeng and their child remain under soft detention in their apartment in Beijing.

[1] Individuals subjected to “soft detention” (软禁) are guarded by police stationed at their homes. Though individuals may be allowed to leave their homes during soft detention, they are closely followed and monitored by police or asked to travel in police vehicles, and often barred from meeting other “sensitive” individuals.
