“Her spirit is not dead. [Cao Shunli] is still with us.”

Fellow Activist

Cao Shunli, a Chinese activist who paid the ultimate price for defending human rights. Her pursuit of justice for the dispossessed gave her strength and courage to devote her life to help China improve its rights conditions despite reprisals by government authorities. In 2013, Cao was abducted from an airport in Beijing, as she was to board a flight to Geneva to attend a session at the United Nations’ Human Rights Council. She disappeared for five weeks until Chinese authorities finally acknowledged having criminally detained her. During the next five months, Cao was consistently denied proper medical treatment until she was in critical condition, when she was finally sent to a hospital, where she ultimately died.
